TRU Waste Processing Center
Wastren Advantage, Inc. (WAI) was the DOE prime contractor managing the TRU Waste Processing Center (TWPC) to treat, store, manage, containerize and ship contact-handled (CH) and remote-handled (RH) transuranic (TRU) wastes, as well as low-level waste (LLW) and mixed low-level waste (MLLW) for disposal at authorized disposal facilities.
The Project
WAI’s six years as the prime required comprehensive expertise in disciplines ranging from hazardous materials management, remediation, and waste management, to conduct of operations (CONOPs), engineering, and security. Our primary role was to disposition the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Oak Ridge Environmental Management (EM) legacy TRU waste inventory through segregation of non-conforming waste, subsequent treatment, interim storage, containerization, and transport for disposal.
Throughout performance of this contract, WAI provided support to DOE Environmental Management (EM) in the areas of performance management and budget planning, scope planning and definition, technical reviews, cost/benefit analysis, professional engineering services, and risk evaluation. Additionally, WAI’s expertise in areas of safety and health programs, environmental policy reviews, worker safety and quality control programs, environmental compliance support, and National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) compliance supported the DOE EM mission at the TWPC.
WAI was described by the DOE Oak Ridge Office (ORO) as a high-performing contractor and continued a tradition of excellence in project programs and operations at the TWPC. DOE exercised its options and extended WAI’s contract by nearly a year – to December 20, 2015 – beyond the original five-year period of performance.
